Mt. Everest emptied

The surge of the virus hits Nepal large, a remote place with various climates (from subtropical through mild and to cold in the mid-mountain region). Over 183,000 cases are officially reported in Nepal with slightly over 1,000 deaths (in addition to many unknown cases when people die in their remote homes uncounted and unreached). That’s the reason why Mount Everest is now closed for all climbers despite losing an important article of the nation’s income from tourism estimated from $0.7 to $2 billion annually. That also left about 1 million people in the Everest-around and general tourism industries unemployed for the period of the shutdown, sliding dozens of thousands of them into poverty and famine.

Will the climbing season of 2021 start when it should? The best months to ascend the mountain are April-May. The lockdown in 2020 season started on those months exactly and nobody can tell today whether there will be a reopening. The Base Camp has emptied, and local Sherpas have to cultivate barley or breed yaks to make at least something for a living. Some people say in reportages they feel like hunger will kill them before the Corona.
